With the Swans first bye of the season upon us, a group of players enjoyed a unique driving experience on Tuesday thanks to the Swans major partner Volkswagen.
Seventeen players including Shane Mumford, Jude Bolton, Rhyce Shaw, Ryan O’Keefe and Nick Smith took part in the Volkswagen drive day, held at a private property in Sydney.
Ruckman Shane Mumford raved about the experience when he spoke to sydneyswans.com.au.

“I had an amazing time,” said Mumford.
“We got taught how to drive around the track which helped us learn about proper racing lines. It’s not all about how quick you can go in a straight line, it’s about holding your speed through the corners,” he said.
“What you realise when you’re out on the track is just how tough it must be for race car drivers. They have to concentrate so hard for every second of the drive. You don’t ever really look at the speedo because all your focus is on the road ahead."
As part of the Swans partnership with Volkswagen, Mumford is soon to upgrade his Golf GTI to a sporty Golf R, and the ruckman said he loved the opportunity to play with the car on the track before receiving his very own.
“I drove the Golf R and was super impressed by how well they hold the road through the corners. The acceleration was great too, but certainly something I’ll leave on the track and not use around the SCG!” Mumford said.
While many of the players showed some potential on the course, one instructor seemed less than impressed with young Swans Irishman Chris McKaigue who wobbled his way around the track.
Jesse White was another said to have struggled around the track, with the key forward lapped by a number of players.
