Ryan Cook spoke to CTV after singing the club song for the first time following his debut against Carlton on Saturday.
The 19-year-old from Rosebud, who was taken with the 23rd overall selection in the 2005 AFL Draft, became the ninth Magpie to make his AFL debut this season, and looked extremely composed in his midfield role.
He gathered 13 possessions and laid three tackles in the hard-fought 24-point victory in front of more than 56,000 people.
Cook admitted, though, that he was “stoked” to get just one disposal, and that winning was the best part about his first taste of AFL football.
“It feels magnificent. The boys fought till the end for me, so I’m just rapt,” said an excited Cook.
“Just to get one touch I was stoked.”
As for the inevitable nerves, the on-ground warm-up before the game allowed Cook to let them out and focus on the task at hand.
“The nerves sort of came out I the warm up which was good.
“Maxy (Nick Maxwell) told me that once you focus the crowd sort of comes out of it, and that’s true, but you can still hear them.
Senior coach Mick Malthouse praised Cook in his post-match press conference for his ability to come into the side and hold his own in the absence of Shane O’Bree and Scott Pendlebury, both of whom have been instrumental in generating midfield drive for the Magpies this year.
Overall, it was a great first outing for Cook, and going by Saturday’s performance, the first of many for him in the black and white stripes.
