Scans revealed the injury was sustained by the 21-year-old in the Bombers' heavy Anzac Day loss to Collingwood, with the club only receiving confirmation of the break on Tuesday morning.
The fresh blow follows news that key defender Tayte Pears will miss up to eight weeks with a broken arm suffered in the same game.
“Tayte’s going to miss six to eight weeks and young Kyle Reimers also fractured his hand and will probably miss around about that period too,” coach Matthew Knights said from Windy Hill on Tuesday morning.
“It’s a couple of blows for really good players who are showing a bit at this stage of their careers, so they’re going to have a stint on the sidelines and come back and make an impact later in the year.”
Knights is confident his side’s defence will still be capable of covering Hawthorn stars Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead.
The coach is likely to persist with young gun Michael Hurley in attack despite his subdued start to the season.
Knights suggested Tyson Slattery and Kyle Hardingham - who could both “play a bit taller” - as contenders for promotion this week to help quell the Hawk pair’s influence.
David Myers, Jarrod Atkinson, Sam Lonergan and Alwyn Davey are also in line for a recall, however forward Mark Williams is unlikely to return as he battles to recover from a foot injury.
Knights is not thinking wholesale changes despite Sunday’s disappointing Anzac Day loss to the Pies.
“Our focus is playing better this week, and it’s only early,” he said.
“It’s an early journey into the season, we’re only five games in [and there’s] 17 to go, so there’s plenty of season to be run and won.
“We’ve still got high expectations of ourselves, as we should.”
