ST KILDA midfielder Luke Ball is on track to return from injury in this week’s preliminary final clash with Hawthorn.

Ball has not played since injuring his hamstring in round 18, but coach Ross Lyon says the match committee will decide on selection after Thursday’s training session.

“He’s training tonight. He’s got to tick a box tonight and the medicos make a decision,” Lyon said.

“We give all our players an opportunity to come up but we’ll see how he goes tonight, see what the medicos say and see what Luke says. We’re optimistic.”

Lyon said the 24-year-old had almost fully recovered from the hamstring injury.

“He’s progressing well. He trained Tuesday and he’s hit some top speeds. I’m not a doctor, I’m not a physio and I’m not the player. Once they make a decision they throw it to match committee and we’ll make a final decision,” he said.

“He’s a very talented player Luke. If anyone can do it I think Luke can.”

Lyon said finals fever had definitely swept over Moorabbin in the lead-up to the Hawks clash but that his players were steadying themselves for what was ahead.

“It’s very bubbly and vibrant. The players are excited but you know they’re working hard and they’re focussed. We’re under no illusions about what’s in front of us but I’m sure the group’s up for the challenge … It’s pleasing to be in this position,” he said.

Lyon singled out Steven King as one of the key factors for the Saints. King has been the side’s no. 1 ruckman this year after crossing over from Geelong last year.

“We value ruckmen and Steven’s been an integral part of that along with Justin (Koschitzke) and Michael (Gardiner) throughout the year. Rixy (Michael Rix) played a couple of games and Ben McEvoy played one.

"It’s all about future actions isn’t it? It’s been pleasing to this point but the coaches and playing group will be judged on our actions on Saturday night.”
