The Swans are now the only AFL club to employ multiple captains, but Goodes, who this year shares the duties with Craig Bolton and Brett Kirk, says he is happy to be one of several men in charge.
“Why not have three different captains on the field at any point in time and three captains to share the media and off-field responsibilities?” Goodes said.
“What better reward for a bloke in the leadership group to know there’s three chances for him to become captain of his football club?”
The Swans are one of the great unknowns this year, with many in the football world predicting a downward slide after six consecutive finals campaigns.
Only three of the other 15 AFL captains predicted the Swans would make this year’s final eight, which doesn’t exactly bother Goodes.
“We’re not too worried about it. The less people talk about us the better. We’ll just get up to Sydney and do our thing and see how we go from week to week,” he said.
“After teams have played us they might have a different opinion about us.”
The dual Brownlow Medalist says his team had shown in the pre-season that it would still be a force in the AFL.
“We’ve played some really good games in the pre-season. We know our game plan still holds up from those couple of games and we know that if we can play the type of football we like to play we can beat any team on any given day … That’s been proven over the last six years,” he said.
“We’ve got to make sure we can start the season well. We don’t want to be 0-3 or 1-3 in the first few rounds so the expectation is to get off to a good start to the season.”
Goodes said fans could expect to see plenty of young talent coming through the team.
“Kieren Jack and Craig Bird should really develop again this season. Jesse White will play a pivotal role for us this year. He played a handful of games last year and even our Canadian import Mike Pyke could definitely play a role in the ruck this year,” he said.
“Between him, Jesse White and Daniel Currie I think there is a position there if any of the three guys want to put their hand up and get it.”
