Melbourne coach, Neale Daniher, has touted young forward Nick Smith as a possible inclusion for this Saturday’s crunch game against Geelong at Skilled Stadium.

Talking before training at the MCG on Wednesday , Daniher said that, if Captain David Neitz did not come up from a hip complaint, then Smith would be looked at.

"Smithy has been pretty solid in the VFL and has been waiting for his turn so, who knows," Daniher said.

Smith, who in the past has struggled with injuries, has played a full season with Melbourne’s affiliate side Sandringham in the VFL. If he were to be selected, it would be just reward for his hard work and persistence he has shown throughout this year.

Playing for Sandringham, Smith has played mostly at the centre half-forward position, with short stints in the ruck and his 197cm / 97kg frame making him an imposing presence around the ground.

The Melbourne selection committee will meet today and name a 22 man team at 6:00pm tonight.
