PORT Adelaide assistant coach Matthew Primus says the club hasn't ruled out promoting former Carlton player Cameron Cloke to the senior list for its season opener against North Melbourne at AAMI Stadium on March 28.

On Wednesday the Power all but assured another rookie, exciting forward Cameron Hitchcock, a round-one debut by elevating him to the primary squad in place of draftee John Butcher, who has been placed on the long-term injury list because of a back problem.

The club has a second opening on its senior list, with midfielder David Rodan also named among the long-term casualties.

Rodan, 26, has made remarkable progress since having LARS (Ligament Augmentation and Reconstructive System) surgery on his knee in December and is eligible to play again in round two.

But Primus said the Power would consider extending Rodan's stay on the long-term injury list, leaving the door ajar for Cloke to play in the early part of the season.

"We still have a position on our senior list available. It depends [on Rodan's recovery] how long that position is going to be there, but Cameron is still right in the mix," Primus said on Friday.

"He played well on the weekend and if he has another good game this weekend he'll put his hand up, so we're still talking about him for sure."

Rodan has been back in full training for the past few weeks, but Primus said the dynamic onballer would need to regain some match fitness before being considered for AFL selection.

"Even though the knee is structurally fine David hasn't really done any match practice at all, so he's still coming from a little way back," Primus said.

"How many [SANFL] games he'll need depends on how he's performing in games, how his fitness holds up and how he's going to pull up. He's going to pull up sore and tight because he hasn't done anything really in our training at all."

Nine Port Adelaide players have been granted permission to play in the SANFL this weekend.

Star forward Daniel Motlop, gritty midfielder Matt Thomas and defenders Michael Pettigrew and Jay Nash are among the players hoping to gain match fitness ahead of the Power's clash with North Melbourne.

Primus said there were still three or four positions in the side up for grabs, including the second ruck spot.

The Power experimented with several players, including Cloke, youngster Matthew Lobbe and forward Justin Westhoff in the vacant ruck spot over the pre-season.

Primus said the club's ruck set-up was likely to change week-by-week depending on the opposition.

"We've had a look at a lot of [ruck] options over the NAB Cup, which has been ideal for us. We're comfortable that whatever way we go the players are going to do the job for us … it's just a matter of which way we want to go round one," he said.

"We wanted to see some signs there that they [the young ruckmen] could handle themselves against teams that we've played against that have good ruckmen and they've done that."

Several players, including Kane Cornes, Jacob Surjan and Travis Boak enjoyed lighter sessions at Alberton on Friday.

Impressive onballer Mitch Banner also left the track early with some hamstring tightness.

Emerging star Hamish Hartlett completed his first session since injuring his hamstring before Christmas and is expected to play a half in the SANFL next weekend.
