Being a member of Collingwood’s last premiership side in 1990, assistant coach Gavin Brown knows as much about finals football as anyone.

Speaking on CTV’s weekly match review The Weekend That Was, Brown couldn’t help but get excited about the prospect of being involved in another finals campaign, and believes September is all about “pressure and composure”.

“Particularly with the weather the way it is, you can smell it in the air almost,” Brown exclaimed.

“The weather picks up a little bit, you get past the dreary winter, it’s always a bit of a grind and a battle through that period, and then all of a sudden you come out the other side and the sun’s out, we’re in September, and this is where it all counts.

“There’s a real buzz around the place, a fantastic opportunity.”

Being such a revered member of the Collingwood Football Club, Brown will not doubt be called upon by many young and even experienced current players, for advice on how to handle finals football.

“I don’t think you approach it too much differently, other than it’s an important game, because if you lose it you’re out in our case.

“But finals are all about pressure and composure, and being able to get on with the job without getting too far ahead of yourself, or worrying about things that you can’t control.

“So I think that’s imperative, to realise that it’s a big game, but just to keep your composure and your wits about you.”

In terms of the club’s preparation for their second-straight finals campaign, Brown is adamant playing two quality opponents in Sydney and Adelaide in the final two rounds is the perfect preparation.

“I think it’s a fantastic thing to be able to play able to play two finals opponents, and particularly the way they play, with proven success in September, both sides. There’s no doubt you’d rather play like that against those sides.”
