BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss refused to use a crippling injury toll as an excuse for his team’s third straight loss on Saturday night, saying they were simply not working hard enough.

The 13-point loss against Fremantle at the Gabba came after lynchpins Josh Drummond (ACL) and Jared Brennan (ankle) were carted off during the third quarter, leaving the Lions two men down on the bench.

With Daniel Merrett, Joel Patfull and Andrew Raines all missing through injury and Matt Maguire through suspension, it left the defensive stocks at an all-time low.

But Voss declined to use that as an excuse.

“I’ve never really been into blaming that,” he said.

“I think when you come in, despite injuries, our set ups are the same, our structures are the same, our roles don’t change, the attitude we carry should not move, I don’t believe in using the injuries as a reason and I won’t.

“That would be an excuse for a performance  when you know that if we’re disciplined in our approach and we can execute what we want to be able to in our team strategy you’ve seen what we can do. Two down on the interchange bench, last quarter, we come home, so it’s got nothing to do with that.

“I’m sure it’s a factor but I don’t really buy into it because there’s enough capability in the group to get past that.”

Led by Simon Black’s inspirational 36-possession game, the Lions narrowed a 26-point last quarter deficit to get within six.

Voss praised Black and ruckman Matthew Leuenberger, who was manful in his match up with Fremantle giant Aaron Sandilands.

However he said the team had plenty of areas to work on after three straight losses.

“At the moment our work rate is just not as good as it needs to be,” he said.

“The opposition is certainly getting away from contests quicker than we are. We’ve shown we can do it; you see in the last quarter exactly what we can do. It’s got nothing to do with fitness, it’s just that intent to get out after it.

“We’re 4-3 so we’re definitely around the mix. Form is easily turnable if we’re committed to do it. It’s got to be that every moment matters for us, not just some of the time; all the time.

“I think you found tonight and even last week that we’re close, but we have lapses, so we just have to make sure we get rid of that and have that disciplined approach through the whole game.

“If we eradicate that I’m sure we can turn it around. I’ve lost no hope on the season. We’re seven rounds in and alive and kicking don’t worry about that.”
