Collingwood refreshed its membership counter this morning after it was frozen last week in a bid to enlist the record breaking member in the lead up to Friday night’s NAB Cup grand final.

Currently the official total stands at 60,118 with the goal to reach 70,000 members in season 2011.

Ruckman Darren Jolly was the chief proponent during last week’s campaign writing letters and calling on supporters to enlist.

“When I heard we had 12,431 members from 2010 who hadn’t yet signed up, I was only too happy to get behind a campaign to pass our record from 2010 and hit 60,000,” Jolly said after the total was announced.

“Since I sent that letter out we’ve signed up nearly 5,000 members, so I’m happy to take most of the credit for that, I’m sure it’s had nothing to do with on-field success," Jolly added.

“Players really notice membership numbers and we’re very grateful that over 60,000 have committed this year already. Now it’s up to us to give them performances to be proud of.”

The club announced 11-year-old Melody Jones as the record-breaking 58,250 during Channel 7’s coverage of the pre-season decider against Essendon.  Melody won a $2,500 shopping spree at the Collingwood Superstore at the Westpac Centre.

The success of the club’s 2011 ‘March to October’ membership campaign - highlighted by the launch of Australia’s biggest ever TV ad, involving around 3,000 Magpie fans at Gosch’s Paddock - has been evident in the way Collingwood supporters have signed up in huge numbers.

The club is now less than 10,000 members shy of reaching its intended target for season 2011.
