Inspirational All Australian, Victorian State and St Alban’s  Club Captain Shannon McFerran won't be pulling on the boots in 2010 due to a battle with serious illness.

The current footy season would have been McFerran’s 14th in the Victorian Women’s Football League (VWFL), but the five-time Helen Lambert medallist (VWFL’s equivalent of the Brownlow Medal) will miss the entire 2010 season. Last December saw Shannon have a brain tumour removed and, although initially shocked at the diagnosis, she still thought there was a chance of playing in season 2010 particularly with the added bonus of being a key leader in the first AFL Women’s High Performance Academy program.

Originally mis-diagnosed with otosclerosis (hardening of bone in the middle ear), which over a ten-year period caused Shannon’s hearing to deteriorate, she was finally diagnosed with acoustic neuroma. “When I found out I was shocked but the fact it was benign was a huge relief,’’ she said.  “I knew that the operation was going to be a big one, but I would rather have it removed than allow it to grow bigger.’’

After the operation in December Shannon was still a little unsure about the upcoming season but was hopeful there may still be a chance of her playing.  “My brain had to work overtime trying to learn to adapt to only having balance on one side of my body, but I still thought there would be a chance I could play. I guess it gave me something to look forward to” she said.

Unfortunately Shannon’s neurosurgeon, who is a huge footy fan, advised her not to play. Disappointed by the advice given by her specialist, Shannon said she had nevertheless been extremely lucky throughout her career. “I have never missed a game through injury, in fact last season was the first time I ever missed a game” she said.

McFerran who has now had plenty of time to reflect, feels her body is long overdue for a rest commenting. “I think it has come at a great time in my career. Hopefully the year of rest allows me to play on longer than expected.”    Meanwhile Shannon is looking forward to fine tuning her coaching skills and providing off filed leadership.  “I am still coaching our youth girls team, but am also one of the coaches of our senior team, so I am really looking forward to a different role,” reflected McFerran.
Shannon admits it is going to be hard on the sidelines, but is excited at the prospect of giving something back to the girls who have given her so much over the years.
On the bright side, Shannon’s recovery is going to plan.
