After half-time, the Hawks were too good for the Bullants kicking nine goals to three, bringing up their third victory for the season.
Turning the tide, the side looked a different group from the side seen against North Ballarat the weekend before last.
Luke Breust starred with five goals, with great support by midfielder Ed Curnow (29) and backman Haydn Kiel (24).
Box Hill Coach Brendon Bolton was pleased to see the Hawks back on the winners list.
"It was an away game today, so that’s always hard to do at that moment. So that was a real positive.
"We did some hard training during the week and it probably woke us all up a bit, because remember it really takes a real hard effort every contest by contest.
"To the boys’ credit today, I think they approached eighty tackles which was a real positive,” Bolton said.
The Hawks tackling pressure was a major factor in the match.
Hitting 75 tackles, the Hawks high-intensity effort paid dividends, hitting the Bullants hard to the ground at every possible opportunity.
Box Hill was short of experience with Captain Steve Kenna, Sam Gibson and Luke Ablett all rested, but it proved no problem.
Leading by three points at quarter-time, Box Hill continued to lift the margin to 17 points midway through the second term.
Dictating play, the Northern Bullants resurgence late in the second term was short lived after the Hawks slammed on four goals straight.
A double-play which resulted in two goals to Jayden Hoegel in the final term closed out the match, giving the Hawks a hard fought victory.
Injured Hawthorn Ruckman Wayde Skipper also returned to the field in his first match since injuring his hamstring tendon in the final pre-season challenge match against Brisbane earlier this year.
Skipper (11 hitouts), running freely played out the match without any problems, but was used only sparingly.
"He’s been out quite a while with a hamstring and he got very limited game time today.
"I felt it was just good to get him started again. This is just the start for him,” Bolton said.
Skipper’s return to the field was a good sign for Hawthorn with already having depleted ruck stocks; some relief will soon be available when the Club feels he is right to play.
With Kiel, Beau Dowler (18) was impressive moving to defense, where he looked comfortable and held his own against some strong tall Bullants opposition.
Jayden Hoegel (18, 3 goals), Brad Neil (16, 1 goal) and Cameron Stokes were also strong performers in a full team effort for the Box Hill side.
Michael Osborne did not play for the Hawks, but Thomas Murphy started for Box Hill and was a solid contributor.
Box Hill moves up to sixth position on the VFL Ladder, with a healthy percentage of 117.84.
Only a single game separates teams in the top eight with the premiership race still open for any challengers.
Next week, Box Hill moves back to their home ground at Box Hill City Oval to play Port Melbourne on Saturday 15 May.
Port Melbourne sits behind Box Hill in eighth position, with only percentage splitting both sides on the ladder with victories even at 3-2 from five matches.
