The champion midfielder has overtaken the previous leader, Swans co-captain Kieren Jack, who failed to poll for the third successive week.
Entering the final round, four players are still in contention to win – Selwood (92), Jack (90), Collingwood star Scott Pendlebury (87) and Gold Coast skipper Gary Ablett (85).
Pendlebury stormed back into calculations with eight votes in the Magpies' big win over West Coast.
Collingwood faces North Melbourne this week, and Pendlebury received the maximum 10 votes when they last met in round one. He has averaged 30.5 disposals in his past four games against the Kangaroos.
Selwood's Cats play the Brisbane Lions at Simonds Stadium on Saturday. He was awarded three coaches' votes after their shock loss at the Gabba in round 13.
Ablett hasn’t received a vote since round 17, when he earned a perfect 10 after 49 possessions and two goals in the win over Collingwood.
That could change when the Suns host bottom side Greater Western Sydney at Metricon Stadium on Sunday. The Brownlow medallist averages 29 disposals and two goals in three games against the Giants. In their round five clash, Ablett received eight votes.
Jack doesn't have a great vote-getting record against top side Hawthorn, the Swans opponent at ANZ Stadium on Friday night, averaging 17.6 touches in his past five games against the Hawks. The hard nut might also enter the contest sore after finishing the clash with Geelong with a limp.
