THE MOTHER of Eagle Brent Staker believes the AFL needs to make an example of Sydney Swans star Barry Hall and rub him out for the remainder of the season.

Rosemary Staker used the words "sick, horrified and astounded" among others to describe her emotions upon seeing the footage of her son being felled by Hall's left hook during Saturday night's round four clash.

And she says the AFL Tribunal must be ruthless in dealing with Hall, saying a lengthy penalty will deter any player thinking they can get away with similar infringements.

"I'd like to see him scrubbed out for the rest of the season because I think that's what it deserves," Mrs Staker told The Age newspaper.

"It's not going to take the incident away or make it look or sound any better, but for anyone else coming through who thinks they might be able to get away with something like that because Barry Hall's done it, it might make them think twice."

Mrs Staker said the tribunal needed to stamp out such acts.

"The powers-that-be are the ones sprouting all the rules, now let them put their money where their mouth is. Whether it was Brent or anybody, what he did was despicable," she said.

"If big, bad, bustling Barry Hall is so tough, why does he have to do it behind play when he thinks no one's watching?

"If he's going to do that sort of thing, why doesn't he do it upfront and be a man about it, if there is such a thing as being a man about it.

"He can apologise all he likes. I don't mean to be harsh or rude and, of course, he'd be having second thoughts today and people might say he got caught up in the moment, but that's all irrelevant.

"He's supposed to be out there playing football, not out there like that using cheap shots on young lads and taking him out when he's not even looking."

"Is the hierarchy going to care because it's a Brent Staker and not a Judd, a Cousins or a Kerr? Is he going to be that insignificant? He'd better not be."
