Playing for Wycheproof Narraport on the weekend, Jones simply had a day out.
“Yeah I had a few touches,” he said attempting to play-down his remarkable efforts.
Taking on St Arnaud, the Demons were significantly lifted by Jones’ stunning individual feat. When asked if he was surprised to have collected 50 possessions he joked “I think they (statisticians) must have robbed me of a few!”
Playing with the reigning premiers, Jones’ inclusion almost guarantees the club another flag based on his first up performance. But it could have been better.
“I kicked about six behinds and dropped a few marks, so it wasn’t the best day for me out there. I’m not in the best nick and have only been training once a week so the fitness could probably improve a bit I’d say.”
Currently working in Essendon with JM Building Solutions, the 30-year old said it’s taken a while to adapt to life outside of Aegis Park and AFL.
“It’s different…not too bad but I do miss the boys,” Jones said.
And as far as playing at a higher level…well, not in the short term.
“I’m not looking at anything at this stage. I’m calling 2011 a ‘gap year’ and just enjoying my footy and working a bit as well.”
Next up for Jones and the Demons is a home match against Birchip-Watchem and the club will unfurl its 2010 premiership flag. But Jones isn’t raising the bar too high on the back of his stellar round one match.
“It should be a good day for the club…If I can kick four or so goals I’ll be pretty happy.”
