THE NAB Challenge clash between the Geelong Cats and the Brisbane Lions has been abandoned due to heavy rain and lightning.

A severe thunderstorm descended on Visy Park just before the scheduled 3pm start, forcing play to be postponed.

Geelong coach Mark Thompson and his Lions counterpart Michael Voss met around 3:15pm and decided that the conditions meant it was impossible to get the game played.

“It’s frustrating for everyone, but to play in these conditions would be of no benefit to anyone,” Thompson told geelongcats.com.au.

“We all agreed that the game shouid be cancelled - it was a unanimous decision.”

Thompson said the Cats would now play an intra-club match on Monday to make up for the lack of match practice.

The cancellation of the game comes after it was moved from the Gold Coast to Visy Park due to a week of rain in southern Queensland.
