MORE than 300 AFL players are heading back to grassroots football to celebrate Community Football Weekend.

While some players will be heading just down the road, others are travelling thousands of miles to go back to where it all began.

Bulldogs ruckman Ben Hudson will travel all the way up to Queensland to watch his old side Mt Gravatt take on Zillmere, while Richmond’s Richard Tambling is heading to Alice Springs.

Some games will have more than one player in attendance.

Former Xavier College students Jobe Watson and Luke Ball are off to Toorak Park to watch several of their former schoolmates represent Old Xaverians against Uni Blacks, while former St Mary’s juniors Nick Stevens and Ben Johnson will go to Ferndale Park to watch their former club take on Bentleigh in the VAFA.

North Melbourne’s Drew Petrie and Collingwood’s Nathan Brown will watch their former side Ballarat take on North City.

North Melbourne forward Nathan Thompson will make the trek to Kyneton – 85km north-west of Melbourne – to see his old club take on Kangaroo Flat and push for its first win of the season.

"I don't probably get home as often as I'd like so I'm looking forward to catching up with all my old mates who are still playing at the club and seeing a bit of country footy again," he said.

"I think it's just very important that you never forget where you came from. It's great that the AFL boys are getting back to their home clubs and basically putting a little bit back in.

"You never forget where you came from because a lot of people put a lot of hours into you, especially me as a young fella growing up. It's great to get back there and say g'day and see those faces again and shake their hands.

"I certainly haven't forgotten the kind people and what that footy club did for me as far as giving me a chance to play at the elite level."
