MELBOURNE young gun Tom Scully lamented some key lapses in concentration that cost his side dearly in Sunday’s 21-point loss to Hawthorn.

The Demons were right in the contest midway through the third quarter, but couldn’t hold off the Hawks despite their best efforts.

“Obviously we’re disappointed at the result but I don’t think we can doubt our effort,” Scully said.

“We just let ourselves down in a few key areas I think. Our stoppages and contested footy were key areas to focus on before the game and we really let ourselves down in.

“We’ll learn from today and move forward.”

With finals on the line, the match received plenty of attention in the media in the week leading up to it, but Scully was happy with how the group handled it.

“It was no different to how we handled any other week,” he said.

“I think the build up and the preparation was no different. We knew there was a bit riding on it and it was a great challenge for us to rise to that occasion and unfortunately we couldn’t get the result.

“If we were in a position next year to play finals I think this will be a great game for us to look back on and learn from. We’ll take a lot out of it.”

Scully had 19 possessions in his 19th game of his debut season and is confident he can push hard to the finish despite the weekly rigours of AFL football.

“I’ve been really diligent with the way I look after my body,” he said.

“The club has been fantastic with the younger guys as well. They’ve really looked after us.”
