PORT ADELAIDE onballer Kane Cornes has claimed back-to-back John Cahill Medals - the club's best and fairest award.

Cornes was crowned the Power’s best and fairest  for season 2008 at an official ceremony at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Saturday night.

The dual All-Australian became just the second player to win the club’s highest individual honour twice, behind skipper Warren Tredrea.

It was also Cornes’ fifth-consecutive top-three finish.

Cornes, 25, finished ahead of hard-nosed midfielder Dom Cassisi and clever forward Daniel Motlop.

Cornes opened up an early lead in the voting from round one and Cassisi, despite a strong finish, could not catch him and finished 20 votes in arrears.

Consistency was a feature for the Power’s top-two with Cornes failing to poll in just two games and Cassisi three.

The John Cahill Medal is voted on by the Port Adelaide coaching panel, consisting of Mark Williams, Matthew Primus, Jason Cripps and Adam Kingsley, with each member able to award between 0-4 votes to as many players as they see fit after each game.

There were also five other awards given out on the night.

Impressive youngster Alipate Carlile backed up his round 22 NAB Rising Star nomination with fifth place in the John Cahill Medal and was also awarded the Gavin Wanganeen Medal as the club’s best player aged under 21 as of January 1.

Travis Boak’s rise in his second season in the AFL earned him the club’s Most Improved Player award.

The Port Adelaide coaches and players agreed on Cassis’s ‘team’ qualities, awarding him the Power’s Best Team Man, as judged by the coaches, and also the Fos Williams Medal, voted by the players, which is based on the attributes of leadership, selflessness, courage, professionalism, loyalty and sense of humour.

Courageous half-back Paul Stewart won the Best First Year Player award ahead of the other five debutants this year.
