GEELONG coach Mark Thompson says his side has things to improve ahead of its clash with a struggling Melbourne side next week.

Despite having just watched his team dismantle Essendon by 99 points at Telstra Dome, a content Thompson said his side would have little trouble preparing for its clash at Skilled Stadium on Sunday.

The match, between the reigning premiers and the bottom-of-the-ladder Demons, looms as one of the most lopsided in years.

Thompson said there would be no complacency among his men on a day when the Cats will unfurl last year’s premiership flag shortly before the ball is bounced.

“We’re just going to go to work tomorrow and review this game," Thompson said.

"We’re going to have the same amount of meetings, we’re going to look at the team we play – Melbourne – in the same depth, and we’re going to try to play the best footy we’re capable of playing."

Geelong looked near-invincible in patches against the Bombers, winning 22.18 (150) to 6.15 (51), although the coach said there were areas to work on.

“We’re fairly happy with the day’s work, but that doesn’t say that the day was perfect,” Thompson said.

“There were a few times there where we didn’t play exactly the way we wanted to play. But generally speaking, to win by that much and kick that score … you’d have to be pleased with that.”

When told after the game that Geelong had recorded the second-most team disposals in a single match (462), Thompson said his team "over-possessed the ball".

“(It's) something we can work on," he said.

“We played a bit of circle work there for a time.”

The Cats led by 20 points at the first change but had looked by far the better team in the first term. Thompson’s men managed just four goals, and could have been further in front.

“We had 20 entries in the first quarter and we scored four goals, so there’s a few little things that happened,” Thompson said.

“But by the end of the game, I thought we’d corrected them, which was a fantastic achievement.”

Thompson praised defender Matthew Scarlett’s job on Essendon spearhead Matthew Lloyd, while he also made special mention of first-gamer Harry Taylor.
