The India Tigers, competing in the 2011 AFL International Cup, were taken for a training session on Punt Road Oval by Trent Cotchin, Daniel Jackson and David Astbury.
The Australian Football League is currently hosting the International Cup, which is being held in Sydney and Melbourne. The tournament, which is a World Cup for many nations playing Australian Football, is showcasing a range of talents and cultures throughout its two-week duration.
For only the second time, the India Tigers are participating in this exciting tournament, wearing replica Richmond guernseys.
AFL India, the sport’s governing body in India, is currently developing football programs to be launched in Kerala and West Bengal.
The country’s participation in the International Cup hopefully will generate corporate support for these programs, and raise awareness of Australian Football both in India and among the Indian community in Australia.
The India Tigers includes 12 players from India and 17 from Melbourne and Sydney’s Indian community.
The India Tigers are proudly supported by the Richmond Football Club, Celebrate India and the AFL.
Chairperson of Celebrate India, Arun Sharma said: “We are proud to host the India Tigers for this fantastic tournament and hope the local Indian community will come and show their support. We look forward to meeting the players and know it will be a great experience for them all.”
Richmond’s General Manager of Media and Stakeholder Relations Simon Matthews said: “This tournament is a great example of how Australian Football can bring together people from different cultures and backgrounds, to compete in Australia’s iconic sport. We are proud to be supporting the India Tigers and look forward to welcoming them to Punt Road Oval.”
India plays Timor-Leste tomorrow (Wednesday August 24) at the Western Oval, at 9am.
