National recruiting manager Derek Hine talks about the club's selections in the 2010 NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft
Draft summary
"In our case it's worked out pretty well. The two boys we took in this draft we had listed for the national draft as well, so we're really pleased.
"If you look at the whole trade and draft period for us we've been able to address two specific needs straight away [with Darren Jolly and Luke Ball], we think Simon Buckley can really add some value to our defensive half and then we added two younger boys [Ben Sinclair and Josh Thomas] with the scope to play in the midfield which give us both inside and outside depth.
"The rookie draft was a continuation of that. What we were able to do with these two boys was really to continue to address both our needs and our succession planning which was our mantra going into both the drafts and the trading period.
"We've been able to achieve that goal reasonably successfully."
Player comments
Selection No.18: Tom Hunter
DOB: 03/02/91, Height: 185cm, Weight: 80kg
Recruited from: Calder Cannons (VIC)
"Tom can play as a half-back, winger or a midfielder and he has super speed. He's a very aggressive player and he really does fit that rookie mould of a player who'll do everything he possibly can to be able to forge a career in the AFL. That's what we look for and we've had some reasonable success with the likes of Nick Maxwell, Tarkyn Lockyer and Harry O'Brien.
"If he progresses the way we think he can it wouldn't surprise if he has the potential to play senior footy next year."
Selection No.34: Jack Carter
DOB: 11/11/91, Height: 194cm, Weight: 85kg
Recruited from: West Adelaide (SA)
"Jack had an interrupted year through a knee injury which was nothing serious, but he's a Sacred Heart boy as well so he never really had any continuity in the SANFL U18s. He comes in as a key back or forward and we'll certainly be looking at him as a succession player who can eventually play in the back half.
"Jack is more of a medium-term prospect, but we certainly bring both these boys in with the knowledge that we think they can be long-term AFL players."
Selection No.47: Seamus McNamara
DOB: 02/05/85, Height: 203cm, Weight: 105kg
Recruited from: Milwaukee, USA
"We were able to get his visa through a lot quicker than anticipated so we brought him over early in November and we've been really pleased with the way that he's developed. If we were to sit down and speak to the coaches they'd say that he's well ahead of where we thought he'd be at this point.
"He's a big man and he's just got an insatiable appetite to learn and develop. The fact that he's come from a professional environment with his basketball has certainly assisted him.
"We're really pleased with where he's at."
