Three Sydney Swans Scholarship holders performed strongly for New South Wales at last week’s National U15 Schoolboy Competition held in Maroochydore, Queensland.

Daniel Robinson, Mitch Crawford and Stephen Wray were key contributors throughout the carnival, in which NSW defeated NT, WA 2 and ACT, whilst suffering losses to Vic Metro and Vic Country. Wray’s performance earned him selection in the All-Australian team.

Dan Robinson, who is the recipient of the Ian Hicks Scholarship, impressed with his overall consistency throughout the carnival and his ability to play a variety of roles from midfield to key position.

“His versatility and consistency throughout the five games were very impressive considering his preparation wasn’t ideal due to injury,” Sydney Swans Elite Talent Coordinator Chris Smith said

“I thought he was the most consistent player for NSW and his ability to play numerous roles for his team was a very pleasing aspect.”

After being rested for the first game, Mitch Crawford’s form got better as the carnival progressed.  The Philippa Power Scholarship recipient was mentioned in the best players when they played against Vic Country and WA 2 and impressed with his defensive efforts.

“You could tell that Mitch’s endurance and overall fitness served him well as the carnival progressed, as his form lifted when other boys started to drop off,” Smith added.

“Once again, I was impressed with his ability to run and carry and take on the opposition,” Smith added.”

Stephen Wray, who is the recipient of the Peter Weinert Scholarship, was the only NSW player to be awarded All-Australian selection for his performances throughout the carnival.

“I can see why Stephen was selected in the All-Australian team. He has the ability to do some very special things on the football field. I suppose the trick for Stephen is to work on being a more consistent contributor throughout games in order to be a really good player, but he definitely has plenty of potential,” said Smith.

The NSW team finished fifth overall, with Vic Country winning the Championships after remaining undefeated. The placings were as follows:

1st – Vic Country
2nd – WA 1
3rd – QLD
4th – Vic Metro
5th – NSW
6th – NT
7th – ACT
8th – WA 2
