With the season now officially ended with the 2006 Grand Final, it is now time for that other great annual fun period to start – the endless rumours that will begin to circulate surrounding the 2006 AFL Trade Week.Rest assured that there will again be an endless stream of speculation about which player or players Fremantle should trade or who will be traded by Fremantle. These will be put forward as if they are fact, knowledge gained from ‘within the club’, or so they will imply. There will be an equal amount of speculation and comment about who Fremantle will be targeting during the annual player trade week. Again, these rumours will suggest that it is not speculation but is indeed true, based on ‘inside information’.The days leading up to the commencement of the AFL Trade Week will be full of speculation. But a simple fact remains that no action is taken on any player movements until trade week begins. Any speculation suggesting that a player will depart Fremantle and move onto another club is purely and simply speculation. The 2006 AFL Trade Week begins next Monday 9 October with the ritual meetings between all 16 clubs occurring at Telstra Dome on the opening day. These meetings, that last no more than 20 minutes or so, are an opportunity for each club to meet in one-on-one meetings. These meetings only preliminary discussions between clubs. One thing that history shows is that very little, if anything at all, is achieved or resolved on the opening day.The remainder of the week is very much about clubs dealing with each other via the phone from the various ‘bases’ they occupy. For interstate clubs, that base is the confines of a hotel room. While the clubs continue to deal with each other throughout the week, it is also the time when the rumour mill starts to accelerate. The speculation also becomes much more creative until the deadline for the completion of player trades arrives at 2:00pm (EST) on Friday 13 October. The club will keep members informed of any confirmed activity during the 2006 AFL Player Trade period immediately on the club’s web site. The Fremantle Football Club group present at the 2006 AFL Trade Week will be Cameron Schwab (Chief Executive Officer), Robert Shaw (General Manager – Football Operations), Chris Connolly (Senior Coach), Steven Icke (General Manager – Player Personnel and List Management), Phil Smart (Recruiting Manager) and Keith Black (General Manager – Corporate Affairs and Communications).
