After producing one of the best performances of his short career against Port Adelaide on Sunday, North Melbourne young-gun Cruize Garlett says the Kangaroos have no doubt they’ll be a force to be reckoned with in the future.
In just his 10th game of AFL footy, Garlett was outstanding against the Power, collecting 24 possessions, including seven contested, and booting a goal as the Roos won by 36 points.
“We’ve got a pretty young midfield, so all the boys are contributing pretty well in there,” the 21-year-old said.
“It’s been a good transition coming from the VFL earlier in the year to getting a game in the AFL.
“There’s a bright future here with Cunners [Ben Cunnington], [Ryan] Bastinac and
Andrew Swallow leading the way, and Brent Harvey’s really helping the boys out, so that’s been great as well.”
At 32, Harvey certainly remains one of the most talented players in the league.
He picked up 32 touches, booted two goals and had seven score-assists in a best-on-ground performance which drew high praise from his coach, Brad Scott.
“I’ve been pleasantly surprised just how much of a team player he is,” Scott said.
“I think some of the team-oriented stuff he does has previously gone unnoticed.”
Harvey himself is adamant the Kangaroos, who have won their past three matches to remain within reach of the top eight, are on the right track.
“We’re starting to hit our straps,” Harvey said after the victory over the Power.
“We’re understanding Brad’s game-plan a bit more. Everyone’s buying into it, which is really good.
“It’s good to be in some good form coming into a break.
“It’s certainly exciting times, but a lot of younger groups struggle with their consistency, so we’ve got to keep our foot on the pedal and keep going forward.”
Harvey says North Melbourne’s older players have been energised by playing in a side with so many young faces.
“Brady Rawlings and Michael Firrito and Nathan Grima, these guys are all playing their part as well,” he said.
“I think we play our best footy when we’ve got 22 contributors and in the last few weeks we’ve really had that.”
Cruize control
After a 24-possession game in North Melboure’s win against the Power, Cruize Garlett believes the signs are good for the Kangaroos’ future.
