The Roosters were back on the winners’ list with a convincing defeat of Geelong, but it was Edwards who stole the show with ten goals and a best-on-ground performance.
“I guess every week I just try and play my best for North Ballarat and hope that a spot opens up in the seniors,” Edwards told kangaroos.com.au.
“I’ve just got to try and do my bit every week.“For Frankston I finished with 12 for one of those games so that was a nice day, but ten’s the second most I’ve ever kicked.”
The reigning premiers started slowly in what was a scrappy opening term with much of the contest played between the 50m arcs, but the number 27 kick-started their attack with a strong contested mark and goal.
Playing on Geelong-listed Tom Gillies for most of the day, he proved far too agile for his taller opponent, pulling down five marks and booting three goals in the second term alone to help his team to a 27-point lead at the main break.
The party continued after half-time for the power-forward as he banged through four in succession to single-handedly put the result beyond doubt.
Two further majors late in the game will put Edwards in the mix for selection against Melbourne, and with fellow-forward Ben McKinley also among the goals in recent weeks, the battle for spots is sure to be hotter than ever at Aegis Park.
“I thought I kicked reasonably straight today,” Edwards joked after missing two shots on goal.
“I missed one late, but I’m happy with the result in the end."
There was some bad news late in the day with Matt Campbell pulling up short on a chase and coming from the ground with another hamstring injury.
