GREATER Western Sydney coach Leon Cameron has escaped a hit to his hip pocket for his unorthodox approaches to an emergency umpire, receiving a suspended $2500 fine.
Cameron left the coach's box and headed to the interchange bench twice during last week's clash with Fremantle at Domain Stadium.
"The AFL's view is that the umpires should not be approached at any time by any club official during the course of the game," the AFL said in a statement released late on Wednesday.
The statement went on to say, the League took into account Cameron "proactively" contacting its umpiring department to apologise before the AFL had sought to follow up as well as it being his first offence under the rules.
After the game Cameron admitted he'd been frustrated at a couple of decisions.
"I just had to clarify a couple of things," Cameron said.
"It's one of those things, it's a frustrating game and I was frustrated at the time about a couple of things."
His actions sparked criticism from opposition coach Ross Lyon and League chief Gillon McLachlan.
"I don't think it's ideal," Lyon said post-match.
"Leon would have his motives for that. But I don't think it's a great look for the game.
"We all get frustrated on different weeks. I understand the frustration.
"But Leon's a really good person. He can do whatever he likes, ultimately. But I don't think it's something we should encourage."
McLachlan said it was "not a good look" for the game.
