KANGAROOS forward Corey Jones says his resurgent side must maintain their high standards against Essendon on Friday night if they want to extend their three-match winning streak.

A win over the Bombers at Telstra Dome would move the Kangaroos' win-loss record into the black, a prospect that looked remote a month ago after the club dropped its first three matches of 2007.

But wins over the Brisbane Lions, Geelong and Sydney - all currently inside the top eight - has the club back on track.

Jones said the players are determined not to make the same mistakes that saw them drop the first three games of the season.

"We had opportunities in the first three weeks (and) I think our wins have been due to our starts," Jones said.

"We know as a group if we just lose that edge or take liberties during the week and then during the game we'll be back where we started three weeks ago.

"You've only got to be up or down five or 10 per cent and you'll get smacked between the eyes."

The team heads into Friday's match at Telstra Dome on the back of consecutive six-day breaks and a gruelling encounter with the Swans, who are one of the hardest running teams in the league.

The 26-year-old Jones said it will only be a light week at training as they prepare to face the Bombers.

"They are a side that are happy, with second and third stoppages, just to set up and start again. They are a hard side," Jones said of Sydney.

"We won't do much this week. We need to make sure ... we do everything right, recover right and make sure we're ready to go on Friday in front of hopefully a big crowd."

Just six rounds in, Jones has kicked 11 goals, halfway towards his 2006 tally of 22 and two behind Brent Harvey's club-best 13.

Jones said he and Harvey aim to each average two goals a game to cover the loss of injured full-forward Nathan Thompson, who is out for the season with a knee injury.

"Brent Harvey and myself had a bit of heat put on us with Thommo going down before the start of the season," Jones said.

"We've got to step up and kick a few more goals."

Should they reach their target, both would beat their previous best season tally of 38 (Jones in 2005) and 35 (Harvey in 2000) respectively.

Thompson was the club's leading goal-kicker with 54 in 2006.
