AS PART of Women’s Round the AFL launched the 2009 Women’s National Championships in Perth on Tuesday.

AFL community development manager Dean Warren launched the championships alongside WA Youth Minister Donna Faragher and WA team captain Nikki Harwood.

Warren said the AFL was committed to carving a path for women in Australian football and was focused on women in leadership positions this year.

"We're very fortunate to have two outstanding women involved at the highest level in the two AFL commissioners Sam Mostyn and Linda Dessau," Warren said from Subiaco Oval on Tuesday.

"There are also twelve women who hold club board positions including the hon. Julie Bishop at the West Coast Eagles and Kate Grieve at the Fremantle Football Club.

"The involvement of women and girls in Australian football is critical to the overall growth and development of our game."

Mrs Faragher said as WA Youth Minister and as a woman it was a pleasure to launch the 11th Women's National Championships, which commence on Wednesday June 3 and will conclude on Sunday June 7.

The championships will be held at venues across Perth with the Division One final to be played as a curtain raiser to Sunday's clash between West Coast and Geelong.

"It is an absolute pleasure to be here this morning to support the AFL and Women's Round and the women's national championships," Mrs Faragher said.

"It is clear that women play key roles across coaching, mentoring, administration to, of course, playing on the field. That's at both the grass roots and national levels.

"As the youth minister here in Western Australia I am very pleased to support this initiative.

"The role that Nikki (Harwood) and others play in promoting positive messages for Western Australian youth, particularly young girls, is absolutely crucial."

The AFL's Women's Round will focus on recognising and developing female leadership across the Australian football industry, from participation to administration, management and football operations.

Activities will take place across the round, including AFL and club events, curtain raisers involving female players and female NAB AFL Auskick participants.
