Ian Brewer
15 June 1936 - 15 April 2010

The Collingwood Football Club is mourning the loss of 1958 premiership player Ian Brewer, who passed away in South Australia early on Thursday morning at the age of 73.

Collingwood players will wear black arm bands as a tribute to Ian in Saturday night’s round four game against Hawthorn at the MCG.

Brewer was a highly-talented full forward who played 84 games and booted 164 goals for the Magpies between 1956-61.

He was the VFL’s leading goal kicker in 1958 with 73 goals, including two majors in the famous grand final triumph over Melbourne. He also won the Magpies’ goal kicking award in 1957 (26 goals).

In 2008 Brewer and his premiership teammates from 1958 were inducted into the Collingwood Hall of Fame, a highlight of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the club’s 13th flag. In accepting the honour on behalf of his team at the club’s AGM that year, Brewer delivered a rousing speech that will long be remembered by all in attendance.

Brewer’s brother, Ross, played 47 games and booted 85 goals for the Magpies from 1979-81, including the 1979 grand final, after crossing from Melbourne where he notched 121 games.
