Peggy’s twin sister Edna attended the Mater Special School – along with her brother Amos – while Peggy underwent treatment. During the time the Tom family were in Brisbane, Amos developed a kidney infection and was admitted to the Mater Children’s Hospital. Later, the children’s mother Edna also became ill and was treated for diabetes-related problems at the Mater Adult’s Hospital.
The children’s father Billy Missi, a high profile indigenous artist from Torres Strait, flew to Brisbane to support his family while trying to organise the opening of his latest exhibition in Cairns.
Before he had to return to North Queensland for the exhibition opening, Billy held a workshop at the Mater Special School. Billy showcased his artwork and taught the students different techniques as his way of saying thank you to the Mater Hospital for looking after his family during such a difficult time.
