RICHMOND has landed a coaching coup, beating a number of rivals to sign Xavier Clarke as the last member of Damien Hardwick's coaching panel.
Clarke had been highly sought following three seasons coaching in the NEAFL and leading the Northern Territory Thunder to the 2015 premiership.
Collingwood, Fremantle and Greater Western Sydney were all understood to have inquired about Clarke's availability during the off-season, but the 33-year-old chose to join a reshaped Tigers panel.
"Xavier has a broad and diverse experience, in both coaching and football programming, and we’re really excited with what he’ll bring to our football club," Richmond football manager Neil Balme said.
"His experience with the AFL’s indigenous pathway programs, and the responsibility of coaching his own team with NT Thunder has provided him opportunities to develop and lead emerging footballers.
“In addition to that, his knowledge and expertise in indigenous engagement will support the extensive programming that our club and the Korin Gamadji Institute already deliver."
Clarke played 105 games for St Kilda between 2002 and 2009 before joining the Brisbane Lions in 2010.
He suffered two knee reconstructions and was forced into premature retirement at the end of 2011.
Following his retirement, he worked with the AFL Players Association in indigenous engagement, and as an indigenous programs coordinator with the AFL.
Richmond has reshaped its coaching team significantly, cutting four assistant coaches at the end of last season – Mark 'Choco' Williams, Greg Mellor, Ross Smith and Mark P Williams.
Brendon Lade also turned down a one-year contract offer to join Port Adelaide on a long-term deal.
The Tigers have since secured experienced pair Justin Leppitsch and Blake Caracella to lead the forwards and midfielders respectively, while Andrew McQualter has been promoted from development to midfield stoppages coach.
The Tigers won't replace the development manager position held by Power premiership coach Williams.
