Earlier this year AFL football was a foreign game to many of the participants of Hawthorn’s Multicultural Schools Program. So it was a great reward for Michael Nguyen the Club’s Multicultural Development Officer to witness 150 of his students battling it out - Aussie rules style - for the Hawthorn Multicultural Cup this week.

Excited children from Wallarano, Resurrection, St. Joseph’s, Spring Parks and Wooranna Park primary schools converged at Ross Reserve in Noble Park for the round robin style modified rules competition.

The focus of the day was to provide the students an opportunity to showcase the skills they had learnt during the year's Multicultural Program in a safe and friendly yet competitive environment.

All matches were played with high intensity and school passion with Wallarano and Resurrection winning the girls and boys competitions respectively. Both schools will now go on to represent the Hawks at the State Multicultural Cup at Visy Park on December 1 against other AFL Clubs who run similar programs.

Junior club representatives from Parkmore and North Dandenong were on hand to observe the great skills on show resulting in a number of players showing interest in joining their clubs next season.

Hawthorn Football Club would like to congratulate all students who competed in the Cup and wish Wallarano and Resurrection Primary Schools the best of luck in the State Multicultural Cup.
