As 2010 begins to wind down and the holiday season gets closer, let’s look at how we can help kids stay active and healthy, as well enjoy a time of year when we all want to let loose and make merry.

When they don’t have the routine of a school day, it can be too easy for kids to turn into couch potatoes. And when you think of the sweets, soft drinks and party food that are often centre stage during the festive season, it’s far from an ideal combination. But it doesn’t need to be that way. With a little moderation when it comes to eating, and by taking the chance to participate in activities the whole family can enjoy, kids can come back to school happy, refreshed and healthier than when they left.

For teachers we will examine whether sugar always results in Hyped Up kids; for parents, we have some tips on how to Eat Healthy and Celebrate with family and friends, and we provide some encouragement for kids to Go All Out For Healthy Holidays this summer.

Lastly, this will be the final 1Seven Newsletter for 2010. As always, we welcome your feedback and encourage all of you to jump online and complete the 1Seven 2010 Survey.

Students will bring sample packets of processed foods to analyse the sugar content and become more aware of all the different types of sugars and their names used in processed foods.

Hyped Up? Sugar & Kids

It’s often taken as a truth that eating lots of sugar makes kids hyperactive - but is this really true?

KIDS

Go All Out For Healthy Holidays

Holidays are a time for relaxing and having fun with family and friends - but it’s really important to stay active and eat healthily.

PARENTS

Eat Healthy & Celebrate

Celebrations - whether they are birthdays, end-of-year festivities or just family get-togethers - are generally a time when food is centre stage. While there’s no need to spoil the fun, if you’re looking for ways to help the kids celebrate and eat healthy, there are some smart strategies you can use..

Feeding Time for Families

The more young people eat with their family, the better their diet.
