MELBOURNE footy fans will be able to enjoy the spoils of victory or drown their sorrows after a loss late into the night thanks to all-night public transport in 2016.

Whether attending night games at the MCG or Etihad Stadium, fans will now have the option of continuing their evening in Melbourne's CBD and still having access to trains, trams and buses.

Metro trains will run hourly from Flinders Street station on all main lines after Friday and Saturday night games.

Trams will run at half-hourly intervals on six routes including route 75 around Richmond and route 96 near Etihad Stadium.

The free-tram zone will continue to apply in the CBD and Docklands.

Some bus services will also be available in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday mornings.

"Public transport is a great way to get to the footy and get home again after the game," Victorian Sports Minister John Eren told AFL.com.au.

"It's cheaper and easier than battling traffic and paying for parking, and means you can enjoy a few beers without the hassle of getting the car home.

"Trains and trams run frequently to Etihad Stadium and the 'G, and extra services are put on for all the big games to get people there for the first bounce and home after the final siren."
