MELBOURNE defender Oscar McDonald has escaped suspension for a late hit on Port Adelaide forward Todd Marshall during the Demons’ 10-point loss to Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on Friday night.
Match Review Officer Michael Christian charged McDonald with using rough conduct against Marshall in a marking contest but deemed that the Demon could accept a $2000 fine, which he has done.
Christian classified McDonald’s action as careless conduct causing low impact to the head.
Midway through the first quarter of the blockbuster clash, with tension building as both sides sought the first goal, Port Adelaide surged forward along the wing when veteran Lindsay Thomas chipped a checkside pass into the path of Marshall and the oncoming McDonald.
With Marshall running with the flight of the ball and courageously committing himself to the contest, a collision appeared inevitable.
Marshall marked on his chest and was solidly met front on by McDonald, who had leapt off the ground to compete for the ball.
As the Power crowd booed, a 50m penalty was awarded to Marshall, who took some time to regain his feet but was well enough to take his kick and play out the game.
It was the only MRO matter arising from a contest in which Port Adelaide climbed to fourth spot.
