LEIGH Matthews has been appointed deputy chairman of the Brisbane Lions' board.
The three-time Lions premiership-winning coach was appointed to the new role at a board meeting of the seven club directors last week.
Matthews will continue in his role as football director.
The AFL legend was unanimously elected to the club's board following former chairman Angus Johnson's unceremonious exit in 2013.
The board meeting also saw Bob Sharpless reappointed as Lions chairman.
Sharpless said the club was starting to re-establish itself on and off the field.
"Our membership has surged past 20,000 – more than 1000 ahead of the same time last year," he said in a statement.
"Our directors are pleased to be playing their role in the club's renaissance along with the players, coaches, administration, sponsors and our valued members."
