Considered a staple in Collingwood’s best 22 for the better part of his 11 seasons at the club, Tarkyn Lockyer’s determination and resolve heading into 2010 is as strong as the former rookie-listed player felt in his debut season in 1999.
Two horror seasons ruined by injury in 2003 and 2004 has maintained Lockyer’s appreciation and increased his desire to reach success at the ultimate level.
His thirst for continual improvement is a cornerstone in the 30-year-old’s consistent success, playing 132 consecutive AFL matches, the fourth longest streak among active players.
“The body is feeling as good as it can be this time of year and I am just looking forward to playing some games," Lockyer told Collingwoodfc.com.au.
“As I am getting a little older I am also getting a little wiser in my recovery and wiser in how I look after my body. It’s paramount to keeping me out there.”
Lockyer’s ability to make himself available for selection every week exhibits his high tolerance for pain, as was evident last year when he battled through a wrist injury by wearing a wrist guard for most of the season.
“I should be in a healthier state, body-wise, this season as opposed to last year.
“Last year I had to wear a wrist guard for a bit of stability and because it was a little bit sore. I had a bit of a clean up at the end of last year and I won’t be wearing any guards (this season).”
Classified as a true utility, Lockyer’s on-field role has developed over time to one that has seen him spend some time in all three areas of the ground.
Last year saw Lockyer average his highest number of disposals in the forward 50 with 4.2 per game (2.5 in 2008) while gathering only 1.6 disposals in the back half (down from 3.2 in 2008).
“I am one of those guys that guys can play predominately forward or in the midfield. This year I won’t be spending too much time down back.
“We have probably got ten guys that can rotate through that small forward, midfield role.”
While continuing his impressive streak is a target on Lockyer’s radar, taking the team one step further in September is his main goal.
“As a group we are slightly ahead of last year.
“I would be pretty happy to play finals again and hopefully we can improve on last year and move up a couple of spots.
“I love what I am doing and want to enjoy finals success for a little while longer.”
