Mick Martyn

David Dench

Bio: Denis Pagan had watched Mick Martyn join the Roos as a 15 year-old and showed a great liking to the 'hard-nosed professional'.

The son of Brian, he was originally a forward in the under 19's but enjoyed a new role in defence during his first year at the club as North Melbourne sought a strong, tough competitor.

Such was his impact in the early years, he won the best and fairest in 1989 and again two years later.

Through the early 90's he was one of the toughest defenders in the AFL and relished the opportunity to play in front and run-off his opponent.

He was an important member of the Roos premierships and was named alongside David Dench in the North Melbourne Team of the Century.

Bio: Considered one of the great full-backs ever to play the game, Dench was recruited from West Coburg and debuted in 1969.

The springboard in many of North's attacking thrusts from deep in defence, Dench was so impressive in his early years that by 1972 he was appointed the club's captain after winning the Syd Barker Medal in the previous year.

He handed over the captaincy to Barry Davis shortly after, but continued to blossom as a player, winning further best and fairests in 1976, '78 and '81.

Dench was pivotal to the Kangaroos' premiership glory in 1975, then held the cup aloft two years later in Keith Greig's absence.

Dench was named in North Melbourne's team of the century at full-back.
