ROSS Lyon has already had a lengthy conversation with Carlton president Luke Sayers as the former St Kilda and Fremantle coach closes in on becoming the Blues' replacement for David Teague.

A day after Teague's drawn-out sacking was confirmed, Sayers has revealed he has been in talks with Lyon.

"What I can tell you is I did have a conversation with Ross (Lyon) (on Thursday night)," Sayers told SEN on Friday.

"A general conversation for about 45 minutes.

"Ross is excited to put his hat in the ring once we figure out whatever is the process to move forward at the Carlton footy club."

Lyon is the red-hot favourite to move back into coaching following two seasons in the media after his departure from the Dockers at the end of 2019.

Heading into Carlton's final-round clash with GWS, Lyon confirmed his interest in the Blues job during one of his media segments.

At the same time, the 54-year-old ruled himself out of the running for Collingwood's coaching position vacated by Nathan Buckley in June, claiming there was too much board instability at the Magpies.

Teague's exit, with a year to run on his contract, caps a messy couple of weeks and continues an unstable stretch for the Blues.

Head coaches Teague, Brendon Bolton, Mick Malthouse and Brett Ratten were cut loose by the club in the space of nine years.

In axing Teague, Sayers also announced the findings of an independent review into the club's football department.

Blues head of football Brad Lloyd and high performance boss Andrew Russell retained their positions, while there were four changes to the club's board.

Most notably, Carlton champion Greg Williams will take over from fellow Blues legend Chris Judd as director of football.
