ADELAIDE coach Neil Craig says he would “be happy” to help Wayne Carey should the former Crow ask for the club’s assistance.

Carey played 28 games in two years with Adelaide after quitting North Melbourne.

Craig, who watched Carey’s ABC TV interview on Monday night, said it was easy for people to be judgemental.

“I feel sorry, not necessarily sorry for him, but I think Wayne needs a lot of help,” he said on Wednesday.

“Maybe the vehicle that made him so great is the vehicle that can help him - that is, our great game of AFL.

“If Wayne ever chose to seek out our football club to get some help, we’d be happy to do that.

“He’s obviously got some issues in his life he needs to address and we all saw that. Life’s not perfect, but hopefully he responds really well to the help he is getting.”

Carey remained friends with former teammates Simon Goodwin and Mark Ricciuto after retiring from the game and was a guest at Ricciuto’s wedding in January.

Goodwin said he had been oblivious to the extent of Carey’s problems with alcohol he revealed on Andrew Denton’s Enough Rope.

“Wayne had some issues and he’s had some issues for a long time and he’s doing his best now to get over them now,” he said.

“If you ask me whether he had a beer after the game? Of course he had a beer. Did we know he was having 30 or 40 a weekend? No we didn’t.”
