WESTERN Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade believes his players have exceeded expectations in the opening 13 rounds and is excited about narrowing the side's focus to a top-four finish.

The Bulldogs have won 11 games this year and drawn one, losing only to North Melbourne by three points in round nine.

Eade said it was more than pleasing to see his players achieve all they have so far, and is looking forward to keeping the Dogs in the top half of the eight.

"I don't think any side after 13 rounds would have thought they'd win 11 games," he said.

"I would have thought we've exceeded all teams' expectations in this situation.

"We've won a couple of close ones and some things have gone our way, but you take your chances while you can and it's now forgetting about what the scoreline is and just concentrating on the next nine weeks.

"We're assured of a spot in the eight so now we can turn our sights to a bit higher.

"It's exciting," he added. "The start of the season was all about making the eight and to achieve that this early is a real plus.

"We'll keep the guys focused on achieving and ensure they're not content where they are, and that they need to keep pressing on and we need to keep improving."

The Bulldogs will fly to Darwin on Thursday this week, two days before their clash with Port Adelaide at TIO Stadium on Saturday night.

The club usually flies north the day before the match, but Eade is looking to give his players every chance to adjust to the Top End's weather with 31 degrees forecast for the next three days.

"We've had plenty of discussions about flight times and we changed our mind a couple of times," he said.

"Last year, we went up a bit later, on the Friday, but we think Thursday is a better day to get up there and train that night, rather than train Thursday here.

"We just thought it might be better to have the main session up there rather than have it down here in Melbourne, to just get used to it a bit."

This road trip marks the Bulldogs' fourth for the year, with the side already notching wins in Sydney, Perth and Tasmania.

Eade said the players' positive record on the road gives them confidence ahead of the second half of the season, with three more interstate trips after this week plus matches against Geelong and North Melbourne.

"I think the guys have got pretty good confidence going interstate. We've always done well at the Gabba, we don't mind playing in Perth," he said.

"As far as travelling, it's not an issue for us. We do it more than other Victorian teams, so you get used to it a bit.

"Certainly winning the three before now has been a plus for us."
