ASSISTANT coach Tony Liberatore runs his eye over Saturday’s clash against Collingwood at the MCG.

Lessons from last week
Last week against St Kilda our players failed to man-up at critical times. Our accountability definitely needed to be better against the Saints.

Our backs
It’s been stressed to our defenders that accountability will be essential if we are going to win the game against Collingwood. Body work has also been a focus for our defenders at training.

Their forwards
The Magpies haven’t kicked a huge amount of goals but they have been effective when the ball has gone inside the forward 50. They have got Anthony Rocca, Scott Pendlebury and Travis Cloke, all of whom are dangerous. Also, there’s Josh Fraser, who might play up forward, and Alan Didak, who might come in to the side. So, they have plenty of options up forward.

Midfield battle
Collingwood’s strength is its evenness. All of its onballers are hard working midfielders who are strong one-on-one. They rotate very heavily off the bench and have a number of options that can go through the middle. It is crucial that we match it with them and get first use of the ball.

The ruck duel
Cameron Cloke is a big loss for us but it just means other players will have to step up. Cain Ackland is obviously going to take the bulk of the load but hopefully the likes of Josh Kennedy, who spent some time in the ruck last week, will be able to fill the gap.

Our forwards
We have a number of options that can play in the forward 50. Also, Brad Fisher, if he comes in to the side, will be another cog. You can even throw ‘Kouta’ up there from time to time as another marking option.

Their backs
We know the Shaw brothers [Heath and Rhyce] are extremely good at rebounding from defence, so, our forwards will have to work hard and make the Collingwood defenders accountable.

Final thoughts
It’s shaping as a really even contest. Collingwood are a very hungry side who haven’t put a foot wrong all year. We will have to make sure that our intensity and effort is at a high level for all four quarters and we don’t fall away towards the end of the game, like we have from time to time this season. We just have to make sure we match it with our opponents when it comes to contested situations.
