The AFL Army Award recognises match day acts which demonstrate courage, initiative and teamwork. These traits were certainly displayed by both Heath and Chris in Fremantle’s Round 3 win over West Coast.
Heath received his nomination for a desperate run and tackle on Daniel Kerr in the dying stages of the last quarter. Fremantle was leading by 13 points with just over 90 seconds remaining when Heath ran down Kerr across West Coast’s half forward line and caught him holding the ball.
In just his second career match, Chris received his nomination for a courageous effort to spoil a delivery intended for West Coast’s Brent Staker. Running back with the flight of the ball, Chris swung his arm in the air to deflect the ball out of bounds. Staker caught Chris high when the pair collided, earning Chris a free kick.

The AFL Army Award aims to reward the one percent style acts such as game breaking smothers, tackles and shepherds. Following each round, the three most influential acts are posted on afl.com.au and fans can log on and vote to determine the best act for the round just played.
At the end of the home and away season, the AFL All Australian Selection Committee will shortlist the 22 weekly winning acts to six nominations which will then be voted on by the public via afl.com.au. The All Australian selection committee will then endorse the winner.
The 2008 AFL Army Award winner will receive a $10,000 Travel Voucher, Trophy and Army Experience. The award will be officially presented at the 2008 Coca-Cola All Australian presentation dinner.
