Collingwood spearhead Anthony Rocca spoke to CTV after booting five match-winning goals against Fremantle at the MCG on Friday night.

It was a momentous win for the Magpies, who had to cope with losing Heath Shaw early to a badly corked thigh, while a number of other players played through pain towards the end of the game.

But with Rocca standing tall up forward and giving the side a strong target all night, the Magpies recorded a memorable nine-point win to improve to seven wins after 10 rounds.

“It was a big game, it was a big build up. We knew they gave us a good touch up last year, we know they’re a quality side,” Rocca said in the rooms immediately after the win.

Having endured a series of personal performances that were blemished by inaccurate kicking, Rocca certainly found his range on the big MCG stage in front of over 44,000 mostly Collingwood supporters, finishing with five-straight goals, 13 possessions and eight crucial marks.

“Nailing that first one was pretty critical. I’ve been really working hard on my goal kicking, even four, five weeks ago when I started kicking badly.

“It just worked today, when I was going through my routine I was just talking to myself about things that I had to repeat to myself to keep the momentum, and follow through with the kicking and things like that, and it just panned out today.”

After trailing at half time by five-points, the 29-year-old said the team rallied after being told exactly where it needed to improve.

“That first half they were harder than us, and we were told at half time they were harder than us.

“So in that third quarter we just had to put ourselves on the line and put our head over it, and that’s how it panned out, we were first into the ball and it allowed our runners to run as well.”
