RUCKMAN Jordan Roughead and midfielder Mitch Wallis are helping prepare the Western Bulldogs women's team for Saturday night's AFL All-Stars game against Melbourne.
The pair assisted women's coach Paul Groves during a training session at Whitten Oval on Thursday, shortly after the players assembled from all around Australia. Roughead will be assistant coach for the televised showpiece of the women's game, which will feature elite players likely to be drafted next month by the eight women’s clubs.
The women representing the Bulldogs had lunch with their male counterparts at the club on Thursday, along with several of the Dogs' players getting ready for a VFL qualifying final on Saturday.
"We've really focused on the one-club mentality. It has been done before and done really well. It has been really positive," Groves said.
"The dynamics are certainly very different. We've got a couple of Carlton and Collingwood players who have already signed and we're really keen to put on a show.
"We're hell-bent on winning, but we're also aware of our responsibilities within the AFL environment. If they can take a hanger, I'm all for it. Just go for it and have fun."
Bulldogs captain Steph Chiocci is among a large group of the top players still unsure of their destination for the AFL women's competition starting next February.
"(Saturday night) is like an audition, but at the end of the day team football is important. It will be a bit strange for some of the girls (who know where they’re going). But we'll do our best to showcase women's footy," she said.
"I've been here (Bulldogs) since 2013 and played in every game, like a lot of the other girls. It's a really good opportunity for us to honour the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne, who both have invested so much in women's football."
Groves, already set up at Whitten Oval in an office next to senior coach Luke Beveridge, has a busy weekend as coach of amateur team Monash Blues in a B-section first semi-final against Old Scotch at Sandringham on Sunday.
"It's quite a juggling act. We'll have a good training session on Saturday morning, then it's all systems go for this (All-Stars) game before switching back to Monash mode on Sunday," he said.
