THE FIELD in the race for the captaincy at Port Adelaide has narrowed to eight following the announcement of the club's leadership group for 2009.

The leadership group, which is voted on by the players, includes 2008 vice-captains Shaun Burgoyne, Chad Cornes and Brendon Lade and also Kane Cornes, Dom Cassisi, Steven Salopek, Daniel Motlop and Dean Brogan.

Salopek, 23, has been touted as a future captain of the Power and has been included in the leadership group for the first time, alongside 29-year-old ruckman Brogan.

Daniel Motlop was added to the group last season, but 2009 will be his first full year in the role.

Missing from last season's leadership group are former skipper Warren Tredrea, who last week relinquished the role as captain, and retired veteran Michael Wilson.

Football operations manager Peter Rohde said the club's fourth captain would come from within the eight-man group and would be made known by early next year.

"The players had a session last week to decide upon the leadership group and those were the guys that were nominated," he said.

"We're very supportive of the playing group's  decision. Obviously, Tredders [Tredrea] has been part of that group for a long time along with Michael Wilson.

"Tredders will still be around the place, but won't be a part of the formal leadership group. Michael has finished up, so there are a couple of spots there and we're very happy for some new guys to step in and have an influence."
