NEW CLUB Geelong has strengthened its hand and will now have three picks in the top seven at this year’s NAB AFL Women's Draft.
The Cats benefitted from a complicated five-club trade completed on Monday, sending pick 11 to Collingwood for selection seven from Greater Western Sydney.
Under the state-based draft system, which requires clubs to draft players from their state unless a player nominates to play elsewhere, Geelong will be competing with Carlton and Melbourne for access to Victoria's top six players. Fremantle, with pick four, will likely have the choice of the best-ranked West Australian player.
North Melbourne, the competition's other new club, will have its first selection (No.25 overall) at the start of the third round.
The AFL issued the new order for this year's draft following the sign and trade period that ended on Monday. The order is still subject to change, depending on the outcome of the free agency signing window that runs until June 7.
The AFL also confirmed Carlton had foregone its eighth-round pick as it had only seven live selections available.
This year's NAB AFLW Draft is set to be held in mid-October in Melbourne.
The AFL also announced on Tuesday it would establish a competition committee to consider all aspects of the AFLW competition, including how the game is played, rules, the fixture and match review and tribunal.
