WESTERN Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade has conceded his side's chances of making this year's finals are now in the hands of the gods after Saturday's 39-point loss to the Sydney Swans.

The result - the Bulldogs' tenth defeat this year - means the club now sits six points outside the top eight with only five games remaining.

Facing four teams above them in the next five rounds - West Coast, Essendon, Hawthorn and Fremantle - as well as Port Adelaide, the club is in serious danger of missing out on the finals for the first time since 2007.

Eade said it was a disappointing match given there was so much on the line for the club.

"It obviously makes it difficult [to make the finals], but we've got five left so we've just got to win as many games as we can," Eade said after the match.

"We were outplayed today, we had some chances in the last quarter and we could have at least put some pressure on or maybe even steal it, but it certainly would have been a steal.

"In the end it just got blown out a bit, which is a little disappointing."

The Bulldogs got outplayed in most areas of the field against the Swans, losing the possession count (399 to 287), clearances (55 to 45) and inside-50s (74 to 46).

If it wasn't for an impressive five-goal haul from retiring forward Barry Hall - in his final match in front of his former supporters at the SCG - the margin could have been more.

After winning four games in a row from rounds 13 to 16, the Bulldogs have suffered back to back losses and face a tough task of making the finals.

"In the midfield we got beaten again, we got beaten in every area - winning the contested ball and clearances - so that was probably where the game was won and lost," Eade said.

The Bulldogs' finals prospects were compounded further with injuries to key midfield trio Daniel Cross, Adam Cooney and Ryan Griffen.

After dominating early with ten possessions and nine tackles, Cross broke his nose and was concussed in a marking contest in the eighth minute of the second quarter. Cross was stretchered off and subbed out of the match.

Brownlow medallist Cooney aggravated his knee - an injury he sustained against Carlton in round 16 - while Griffen is fatigued.

"Cooney probably won't play next week," Eade said.

"Ryan just looks a bit fatigued, he's probably been carrying the midfield a bit as we've been down on personnel and he's been the main one with Boydy. So whether that's just taken its toll, I'm not sure.

"Certainly with those two players well, we're a better chance of winning."
