Even though new AFL franchise Greater Western Sydney will monopolise much of the first round at next month’s 2011 AFL National Draft, the Brisbane Lions will still head into the off-season with a good collection of draft picks up their sleeve.

As it currently stands, the Lions have four picks inside the top 34 (Pick No.8, Pick No.29, Pick No.30 and Pick No.34), with Pick No.52, Pick No.70 and Pick No.88 to follow if required.

The Lions receive Pick No.29 as a priority selection after failing to win five matches this season, while the Club has also opted to activate the compensation selection received at the end of last year from the Western Bulldogs in exchange for Justin Sherman.

But it’s important to note that the final drafting order is still subject to change significantly during next week’s trade period.

Also, Clubs who have received compensation for losing players to GWS (including Adelaide, Melbourne, Fremantle and the Western Bulldogs) can still opt to utilise their compensation picks this year, which will put the Lions back a few places further.

The Lions’ senior list has already been trimmed following the departures of Luke Power, Jamie Charman, Matt Austin, Xavier Clarke and Brendan Fevola, leaving five vacant spots for potential draftees or rookie elevations.
